Texas A&M University will hold a funeral service on Friday for Miss Reveille IX, the school’s former mascot, who passed away last month due to health complications, the Corps of Cadets announced.
The ceremony, which is open to faculty, staff, students, alumni, and the public, will take place at 5 p.m. on the O.R. Simpson Drill Field. After the service, Miss Reveille IX will be laid to rest beside the university’s previous eight mascots at the Reveille Memorial near the north end of Kyle Field, according to a university release.
Miss Reveille IX represented Texas A&M from May 2015 to April 2021, before retiring to the Stevenson Companion Animal Life-Care Center. She passed away on Sept. 27 at the age of 11, following complications from pneumonia, the university confirmed.
The Reveille tradition began in 1931, when members of the Corps of Cadets brought an injured stray dog onto campus. Her presence was discovered after she barked during the morning bugle call, “Reveille,” which is used to wake military personnel. The dog, later named Reveille I, became Texas A&M’s first official mascot and served until her passing in 1944.
Today, Reveille X holds the title of the university’s mascot, having been introduced in spring 2021. After being diagnosed with glaucoma, she underwent surgery in July to remove her right eye. Despite the setback, Reveille X has returned to her regular duties on campus — including leading the team onto Kyle Field before Aggie football games.
