The college football transfer season is in full swing, with several standout players making roster changes across the nation. For the Mississippi State Bulldogs, their quarterback has officially entered the transfer portal, with a new destination that adds to the team’s pain. He started eight games for the Bulldogs, achieving impressive numbers, including 1,886 passing yards and 11 touchdowns, along with 69 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns. However, he faced challenges with turnovers, throwing seven interceptions. Despite these hurdles, the talented QB showed significant potential and chose to transfer for further growth in his career. He has now committed to one of Mississippi State’s top SEC rivals, as Van Buren has officially joined the LSU Tigers.
“BREAKING: Mississippi State true freshman QB has committed to LSU, he tells On3Sports. The 6’0″, 200-pound QB recorded 1,886 yards and 11 touchdowns this season (in 9 games) and will have three years of eligibility left,” reported Hayes Fawcett of On3 Sports on X, formerly known as Twitter.
While LSU will have Garrett Nussmeier back as their starting quarterback for the 2025 season, it will be his last year with the team, meaning the Tigers will need to find someone to take over the position in the future. That potential future quarterback could be Van Buren. Although it’s unlikely he will have a significant impact on LSU’s plans for 2025, he may redshirt as he acclimates to his new team. It’s also worth noting that Van Buren was not initially expected to play at Mississippi State this season; however, an injury to Blake Shapen led to him being called into action. Given his impressive potential, this move could yield long-term benefits for the Tigers. For now, though, LSU’s primary focus is to end the current season on a high note with a win against Baylor in the Texas Bowl.
