Blockbuster Trade Proposal Sends Rasmus Andersson to Rangers in Major Deal
Following last season’s disappointing playoff exit, the New York Rangers could look to make a bold move — and one trade proposal has them landing Calgary Flames defenseman Rasmus Andersson in a major deal.

The suggested trade, pitched by Heavy.com, would give the Rangers a top-four defenseman in Andersson, helping to strengthen their blue line and add offensive depth — especially with the loss of K’Andre Miller. Andersson, 27, is entering the final year of his six-year, $27.3 million contract and has been a frequent name in trade rumors. He tallied 11 goals and 20 assists (31 points) in 81 games last season and could slot in on New York’s second power-play unit.
Given Andersson’s contract status, it’s likely any deal would include plans for an extension.
In return, Calgary would receive two valuable draft picks, including a first-rounder, plus Brennan Othmann, a former first-round pick (16th overall, 2021) who hasn’t secured a consistent NHL role. A change of scenery could benefit Othmann, potentially giving Calgary a promising middle-six forward.
Carson Soucy would also head to Calgary as a replacement on the blue line and to help balance out the salary cap implications.
Insider: Andersson Trade Still Expected
Although Andersson remains with the Flames, many insiders believe he’s likely to be moved before the March 6 trade deadline. TSN’s Pierre LeBrun recently said that while both sides are committed to making the most of the current situation, a trade remains the more probable outcome.
“He almost got traded to Vegas,” LeBrun said on Insider Trading. “He’s ready to give his best for the Flames, but unless there’s a long-term eight-year deal on the table — which isn’t likely right now — I still think a trade is the most realistic option.”
Andersson, originally drafted 53rd overall by Calgary in 2015, has played his entire NHL career with the Flames.
Rangers’ Patience Wearing Thin with Othmann?
Brennan Othmann was once seen as a future top-six winger for the Rangers, but so far hasn’t made the leap. After struggling during training camp, he was sent back to the AHL. Head coach Mike Sullivan acknowledged some improvement but made it clear more was expected.
“He skates well, he gets in on the forecheck,” Sullivan said. “But we’ve been encouraging him to embrace the traffic — don’t hang out in the safe areas. If he can do that, his skill set fits the kind of high-pressure game we want.”
Othmann has played just 25 NHL games, with 0 goals and 2 assists to his name.
