The San Antonio Spurs currently rank 11th in the Western Conference, a spot they’ve become accustomed to in recent seasons. However, this year’s performance feels different. After finishing last season with just 22 wins, they’ve already reached a 13-13 record. The competition in the West is incredibly strong right now. Still, with talents like Victor Wembanyama, Devin Vassell, Jeremy Sochan, and rookie Stephon Castle, it seems the Spurs are on the brink of a breakthrough. While they may not make the playoffs this season, the fiercely competitive Wembanyama senses an opportunity.
Along with the Houston Rockets, Charlotte Hornets, and Minnesota Timberwolves, the Spurs are part of a young and rising group, though their rivals in the conference are a bit more advanced. Wembanyama is eager to make a significant impact after last year’s struggles. Following a loss on Sunday, he remarked, “I feel like we’re part of that stacked West. Today, there were eight teams with 13 and 14 wins, which is wild—more than half the conference. It’s exciting to compete for these spots alongside teams that have been successful for a while.
” With the aging Los Angeles Lakers, Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Clippers, Denver Nuggets, and Phoenix Suns, whose championship windows are closing, the Spurs have a solid core and superstar and are focused on internal development as they aim to climb the standings in the coming years. Wembanyama confidently stated, “The very top is not far away.” Following the drafting of Wemby in 2023, expectations are high for the Spurs to be competitive for the next 15 years, potentially starting next season.
