The Brewers have positioned themselves well in the National League Division Series, jumping out to a 2-0 lead over their division rivals, the Chicago Cubs. But with each game, the challenge of sealing the series grows tougher.
On Wednesday night, the Cubs edged out a 4-3 victory at Wrigley Field, keeping their postseason hopes alive and shifting some momentum back in their favor. While the Brewers still have two chances to eliminate Chicago, the pressure is mounting heading into Game 4.
Despite the odds still being against them, the Cubs have gained a deep respect for their opponent over the course of the season — especially shortstop Dansby Swanson, who offered high praise for Milwaukee after Wednesday’s narrow loss.
“They don’t make anything easy,” Swanson said, via MLB.com’s Jordan Bastian. “That’s kind of been their identity all year. But we’ve been right there with them, battling just as hard all season.”
The Brewers showed their resilience once again in Game 3. Despite a shaky start by rookie Quinn Priester, who gave up all four of Chicago’s runs in the first inning before being pulled, Milwaukee’s bullpen shut the Cubs down over the final 7 1/3 innings, allowing no earned runs and just five hits.
The Cubs-Brewers rivalry has been especially fierce this year, fueled not only by both teams making the postseason but also by former Brewers manager Craig Counsell’s controversial move to join the Cubs. Despite the heightened emotions, the series has been marked more by mutual respect than animosity.
Swanson’s comments reflect that sportsmanship, acknowledging that while both teams are fierce competitors, they also recognize the quality on the other side.
