Jets Part Ways with Young DT After Disappointing Run
After a tough 0-6 start to the season, the New York Jets are beginning to make roster adjustments. Currently the only winless team in the NFL, the Jets are looking to make moves in hopes of turning things around.
On Tuesday, Jets insider Rich Cimini reported that the team has waived second-year defensive tackle Leonard Taylor III, following his 16-game tenure with the squad. Taylor appeared in 14 games last season, recording 1.5 sacks, four tackles for loss, 24 tackles, and one pass deflection. However, his impact this season has been minimal, as he only played in two games and hasn’t suited up since Week 3.
With the Jets needing to improve their roster, parting ways with players at the lower end of the depth chart seems like a logical step. Though Taylor showed potential as a defensive lineman, he hasn’t been able to make a significant impact this year. This decision, while difficult, is a necessary one for the team’s future.
There’s still a possibility the Jets could re-sign Taylor to their practice squad in the near future.
More Moves Could Be on the Horizon
Releasing Taylor won’t be the last roster shakeup for the Jets this season. Amid a rough start, the team has been linked to numerous trade rumors.
Players like Allen Lazard, Breece Hall, and Quincy Williams have all been mentioned as potential trade candidates, with the Jets possibly embracing a rebuilding phase. Even defensive standout Jermaine Johnson has seen his name pop up in trade talks.
Breece Hall, in particular, stands out as a trade asset. With his contract expiring soon, the Jets may choose to move him now rather than risk losing him for nothing in free agency. Trading him would make sense given his current value.
As for Jermaine Johnson, he could bring back a significant return, though players of his caliber are usually the foundation of a defense. If he can stay healthy, Johnson remains a dominant edge rusher.
The Jets’ decision to part ways with Taylor is just one of many tough calls the team will likely face as they navigate the rest of this challenging season.
