The Baltimore Orioles made a notable free agency move to enhance their starting rotation, reaching a one-year, $ 13 million agreement with right-handed Japanese pitcher, as reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
While attention this winter has largely been on 23-year-old Roki Sasaki in the international market, Sugano was also in high demand and is regarded as one of the top pitchers in the history of Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball, where he has spent his entire career with the Yomiuri Giants.
At 35 years old, Sugano has had a remarkable international career over his 12 seasons in Japan.
Notably, Sugano just finished the best season of his career. In 2024, he made 24 appearances and posted an impressive 1.67 ERA over 156.2 innings, nearly matching his stellar 2017 season when he recorded a 1.59 ERA in 25 games over 187.1 innings.
Throughout his career, Sugano has received two Sawamura Awards (the Japanese equivalent of the Cy Young), two Central League MVPs, eight All-Star selections, and has led the league in ERA four times.
Given his age, Sugano wasn’t expected to secure a major contract like the one Yoshinobu Yamamoto received last year or what Sasaki might command if he were eligible. However, the $ 13 million deal is still considerable and could bring significant value to the Orioles.
Sugano continues to perform at a high level and has demonstrated his ability to serve as a reliable anchor for a rotation, suggesting that he may achieve even more success moving forward.
This signing may also indicate that the Orioles are bracing for the potential departure of Corbin Burnes. The top pitcher available is likely to receive offers over $ 250 million, and although the Orioles have expressed interest in re-signing him, Sugano’s contract might hint that Burnes’ return is unlikely.
Nonetheless, bringing Sugano on board is an exciting move that could help address the gap left by last season’s ace.
