Luke Fickell Urges Wisconsin Fans to Match Team’s Effort Amid Mounting Frustration

Despite growing unrest among Wisconsin football fans — and some calling for his job — head coach Luke Fickell addressed the UW community during a Monday press conference, urging fans to give their full support, just as he expects from his players and staff.

Following a demoralizing 37-0 defeat to the Iowa Hawkeyes, discontent among fans and program alumni is intensifying. As the Badgers prepare to host top-ranked Ohio State on Saturday, the team is desperate to avoid going a full year without a win against a Power Five opponent — something that hasn’t happened since their last victory over such a team on October 19, 2024.

When asked what he’d say to disappointed fans, Fickell responded, “They have to be like us. Every game is a new game.” While he’s trying to emphasize a clean-slate mentality, the on-field results have told a different story. Over their last 11 games, the Badgers have managed just two wins — both this season against lesser competition (Miami-Ohio and Middle Tennessee).

Fickell acknowledged the frustration: “I understand it. I don’t blame you. But Saturday is still coming, and we need our best — from players, coaches, and the fans.”

So far, improved effort hasn’t translated to improved performance. Last season’s loss to Iowa was a key motivator in the offseason, but little changed — Wisconsin still gave up 210 rushing yards and allowed 5.8 yards per carry, only slightly better than the 6.2 they allowed a year ago.

Fickell pleaded for continued support — especially for the players: “Fans can be upset with me, that’s fine. But don’t take it out on the kids. They need to feel your support. They know what they’re up against, and this has to be a collective challenge for all of us.”
