The LSU Tigers are set to face Vanderbilt tomorrow, but they may be without two key defensive starters. Head coach Brian Kelly provided an injury update on Thursday.

“(Aaron) Anderson and (Paul) Mubenga are probable. (Whit) Weeks and Jamari Butler are questionable, and (Bernard) Gooden is doubtful,” Kelly said.

Linebacker Whit Weeks and defensive tackle Bernard Gooden—both starters—are dealing with injuries. Weeks continues to be hampered by the ankle that underwent offseason surgery, while Gooden is recovering from a collarbone issue.

The Tigers’ defense will have its hands full against Vanderbilt’s high-powered offense, which ranks No. 7 nationally in scoring. Kelly emphasized that discipline and execution will be critical if LSU wants to contain the Commodores’ attack.

“The first thing I told them was that we’re playing Navy — it’s like facing the triple option. You have to do your job. If you don’t, they’ll hit a big play. You can’t just think you’ll out-talent Vanderbilt. They’ll make you pay,” Kelly said.

On offense, wide receiver Barion Brown had just two catches for 22 yards in last week’s 20-10 win over South Carolina. Kelly acknowledged that the coaching staff needs to find more ways to get Brown involved.

“It’s really about recognizing we’ve got a special player and finding more ways to get him the ball,” Kelly said. “Sometimes it depends on game situations, but we have to be intentional about creating those opportunities for him.”
