ACC Coach Emerges as Candidate to Replace Billy Napier at Florida

With Billy Napier’s time at Florida nearing its end, attention has turned to who might succeed him. Among the potential candidates is SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee—an intriguing option thanks to his offensive pedigree and recent success. At just 42 years old, Lashlee brings youth, energy, and a track record of building high-powered offenses that could appeal to the Gators.

Lashlee’s Coaching Journey

Originally from Arkansas, Lashlee played quarterback under Gus Malzahn in high school and later continued his playing career at the University of Arkansas. He steadily climbed the coaching ranks, with stops at his alma mater and two stints at Auburn. Lashlee later served as offensive coordinator at Miami under Manny Diaz before taking over at SMU in 2022, marking his first head coaching job.

Since arriving at SMU, Lashlee has compiled an impressive 34–14 record. He guided the Mustangs through their move from the AAC to the ACC, and has led them to back-to-back 11-win seasons, including a College Football Playoff appearance in 2024. SMU also finished seventh nationally in scoring offense last year. His winning percentage is the highest at SMU since the Bobby Collins era—a time marred by NCAA sanctions in the 1980s.

Contract and Potential Roadblocks

Because SMU is a private institution, Lashlee’s contract details remain undisclosed. He reportedly signed an extension through 2030, but specific terms—such as buyout clauses—aren’t public. This secrecy could complicate any move to Florida.

Lashlee has never worked at Florida, but he does have ties to the state and region, having spent two seasons coaching at Miami and seven total seasons in the SEC. Compared to some high-profile coaching targets, he may represent a more cost-effective option—though his availability could be a challenge. His current SMU team is 5–2 and still in the ACC title race, meaning any serious talks with Florida may have to wait until after the postseason.

In a crowded field of potential replacements, Lashlee’s offensive acumen and rising profile make him one to watch as the Gators weigh their next move.
