Shane Beamer and the South Carolina Gamecocks suffered a recruiting setback following their loss to Oklahoma, as 2026 tight end prospect Jamel Howse announced his decommitment from the program.
According to On3’s Hayes Fawcett, Howse made the decision public on Sunday. The talented in-state recruit had been committed to South Carolina since last October and is ranked as the No. 14 tight end in the 2026 class, per Rivals.
Currently a standout at Newberry High School, Howse has recorded 32 receptions for 392 yards and four touchdowns this season, earning a spot in the prestigious Shrine Bowl — a sign of his growing profile.
Rated as a three-star prospect with an 88 grade on 247Sports, Howse ranks as the No. 11 player in South Carolina and the No. 32 tight end nationally. His composite score of 0.9086 places him in four-star territory, ranking sixth in the state, 13th among tight ends, and 282nd overall in the 2026 national class.

It’s a tough setback for Shane Beamer and the South Carolina Gamecocks, as they lose a key 2026 prospect with tight end Jamel Howse officially decommitting from the program.
In the meantime, the South Carolina Gamecocks continue their 2025 campaign with a 3-4 record after a 26–7 loss to No. 13 Oklahoma, putting their bowl eligibility hopes in jeopardy.
Offensive inconsistency has been a recurring issue for South Carolina, averaging just 20.1 points per game while allowing 20 points per game on defense. Quarterback LaNorris Sellers has yet to make a major impact, throwing for 1,134 yards, five touchdowns, and two interceptions so far.
In the run game, Rahsul Faison leads the way with 64 carries for 282 yards and three touchdowns. The receiving corps is headlined by Vandrevius Jacobs and Nyck Harbor — Jacobs has hauled in 21 passes for 343 yards and two scores, while Harbor has 17 receptions for 278 yards and two touchdowns.
The Gamecocks currently sit 12th in the SEC standings, ahead of Mississippi State, Arkansas, Auburn, and Kentucky. They’ll look to bounce back at home when they face the No. 4 Alabama Crimson Tide on October 25 at 3:30 p.m. ET.
