Lions Add Speedy Linebacker Following Trade Deadline
The Detroit Lions didn’t make any trades before the NFL deadline, but they still made a roster move soon after — bringing some extra speed to their lineup.
On Wednesday, the team announced the signing of linebacker Ty Summers to the active roster, promoting him from the practice squad. The move bolsters the team’s depth and flexibility at linebacker while filling a roster spot left open by an injury.
Lions Re-Sign Ty Summers
Summers has been on the move this season — the Lions released him from the active roster in October, only to re-sign him to the practice squad the next day. He now returns to the main roster, taking the spot of offensive lineman Christian Mahogany, who was placed on injured reserve.
A seventh-round pick of the Green Bay Packers in 2019, Summers has played in 86 career games, recording 90 tackles and contributing primarily on special teams. This year, he has appeared in three games for Detroit, participating in over half of the special teams snaps but seeing no defensive action.
Campbell Frustrated After Vikings Loss
The Lions’ defense faltered in Sunday’s 27–24 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, a letdown that head coach Dan Campbell found particularly frustrating coming off the team’s bye week.
“Very disappointing,” Campbell said, via SI.com. “We knew what was coming. There was nothing we hadn’t seen before, but we didn’t handle it well. We weren’t on the same page.”
Campbell also pointed out that the Vikings gained momentum through key special teams plays — an area where Summers could help as Detroit prepares to face the Washington Commanders, who will be without injured quarterback Jayden Daniels.
Additional Roster Changes
Detroit also made other personnel moves this week, releasing two players who had been on injured reserve since the preseason: offensive tackle Justin Herron and tight end Kenny Yeboah.
According to USA Today’s Lions Wire reporter Jeff Risdon, Yeboah was expected to compete for the primary blocking tight end role before a knee injury in the Hall of Fame Game sidelined him. He has since reached an injury settlement with the team.
