Colin Cowherd Praises Sam Darnold as the NFL’s Top Quarterback
Sports commentator Colin Cowherd has made a bold claim about Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold, declaring him the best quarterback in the NFL right now — the first major national analyst to do so.
During the offseason, only a handful of voices suggested that Seattle might actually be upgrading at quarterback by swapping Geno Smith for Darnold, while most viewed the move as a downgrade or, at best, a lateral change. Still, even Darnold’s biggest supporters didn’t predict he’d perform at this high a level so early in his Seattle tenure.
Through eight games, Darnold ranks among the league’s elite in nearly every major passing category — third in passer rating (116.0), second in QBR (77.7), second in success rate (54.04%), and fifth in total EPA (66.19). His dominant performance against the Washington Commanders last week has even pushed him into the NFL MVP conversation.
Cowherd’s recent comments echo what Pro Football Focus (PFF) has been indicating for much of the season. PFF currently grades Darnold as the No. 1 quarterback in football, with a 93.5 overall rating, edging out Matt Stafford’s 91.7.
A victory over the Los Angeles Rams next week — and outplaying Stafford head-to-head — could further validate Cowherd’s and PFF’s stance that Sam Darnold is playing like the best QB in the NFL right now.
