Tsunoda’s Las Vegas FP1 ‘Victory’ Over Verstappen Sparks Comments About His F1 Future
In Las Vegas, Yuki Tsunoda accomplished something he hadn’t managed in any of the previous 19 Grand Prix weekends: he outpaced teammate Max Verstappen on pure performance in an official Formula 1 session.
“I hope it continues throughout the weekend and that Yuki delivers a strong showing — it would be important for his F1 career.”
Tsunoda has collected just 25 points across the 19 race weekends since joining Red Bull’s lineup, averaging under two points per event. Meanwhile, Red Bull sits third in the Constructors’ Championship with 366 points, 341 of which belong to Verstappen — nearly fourteen times Tsunoda’s total.
Yet in Las Vegas, after an early moment where Verstappen pulled almost eight-tenths clear, the former Racing Bulls driver rediscovered his speed. He climbed back to match the Dutchman’s pace for most of the opening practice session, even finishing ahead of him for the first time since becoming teammates at Red Bull.
Red Bull shows optimism as Button issues career-minded plea
Former F1 World Champion Jenson Button expressed hope that Tsunoda could use this momentum to finally showcase his potential “for his career” in Formula One.
“This is the first practice session in a long time where someone has been quicker than Max Verstappen in the same car,” he pointed out.
“I hope it carries through the weekend and that Yuki can produce a strong performance — for his future in F1,” Button added.
