Julian Lewis Discusses Possibility of Redshirting After Colorado’s Home Finale
Freshman quarterback Julian “JuJu” Lewis, now 0–2 as a college starter, spoke with reporters after Colorado’s Senior Day loss to Arizona State on Saturday night. Lewis flashed potential but faced significant struggles throughout the game.
BOULDER — Despite limited support from his offense, Lewis took a step backward in his second career start. The former five-star recruit completed 19 of 38 passes for 161 yards and one touchdown, finishing with a 50% completion rate. Though he showed moments of promise, Lewis left the field frustrated as the Buffaloes fell 42–17 to the Sun Devils.
After the game, Lewis was asked whether he might redshirt — a decision that would require him to sit out next week’s matchup with Kansas State.
“Honestly, I’m not sure. There’s a lot more that goes into that than just me,” Lewis said. “I don’t have any updates on it.”

“Nothing compares to live reps. It’s good to get these early, but I wish I’d performed better for my teammates. The O-line fought hard, but I took unnecessary sacks and didn’t get the ball out in time.”

“You could tell we wanted to put points on the board. It came down to missed chances. We’ve got a lot to clean up as a unit and build on for next year.”

“They dropped into big zone looks most of the night. We didn’t always do what we needed to get open, and I didn’t do what I needed to complete throws. The O-line held up, but I still took sacks I shouldn’t have.”

“He’s a guy you can’t cover in man. He’s proved that. But with ASU sitting in those zones, it changed some of what we wanted to do.”
Comfort in the Pocket
“I feel comfortable back there. But there were plays where I needed to get rid of the ball quicker. Too many sacks, too many incompletions. Things you just can’t do as a quarterback. I take full responsibility.”
Keeping the Team Together Through the Offseason
“You can’t judge us just by the final record. That’s what I keep telling the guys. We have to keep working. A lot of freshmen are getting their shot right now, and I tell them to stay ready. Players will hit the portal—we can’t control that.”
Early Development at the College Level
“There’s no way to describe how much I’ve grown with reading coverages, understanding offenses, recognizing blitzes. In high school, you don’t see all that. College defenses throw a lot more at you.”
