Browns “Comfortable” with $30 Million Contract for Former Steelers Bust Devin Bush
Once considered a major disappointment, Cleveland Browns linebacker Devin Bush is now earning a second chance after an impressive resurgence. Drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers as the No. 10 pick in the 2019 draft, Bush showed early promise, starting 15 games as a rookie and recording 109 tackles. However, a torn ACL in his second year derailed his career, and by the time he hit free agency in 2023, the Steelers showed no interest in re-signing him. He ultimately signed a one-year, $3.5 million deal with the Seattle Seahawks.
At that point, Bush had gained a reputation as one of the NFL’s biggest draft busts. His struggles in Pittsburgh were widely criticized, with USA Today labeling him the “biggest Steelers NFL draft bust” and Sports Illustrated naming him among the “Biggest Draft Busts of the Past 10 Years.”
Browns Find a Bargain in Devin Bush
However, Bush has found new life in Cleveland. After signing a minimum deal with the Browns in 2024, he played well enough to earn a return contract for this season. The results have been impressive: 75 tackles in 11 starts, a career-high five passes defended, and four quarterback hits. His performance has elevated him to No. 6 among linebackers in Pro Football Focus’ rankings, earning a solid grade of 84.9 for the season.
With his breakout year, Bush is now poised for a significant pay raise. Although the Browns have already signed defensive stars Myles Garrett and Alex Wright to new contracts, Bush is expected to be next in line for an extension.
Devin Bush’s Breakout Year Earns Attention
NFL contract expert Mike Ginnitti of Spotrac views Bush as one of the top linebackers set to hit free agency in the near future. “Devin Bush in Cleveland has really outperformed expectations,” Ginnitti said on The Spotrac Podcast. “He’s showing the development that Cleveland hoped for, and now he’s a key part of their defense.”
Ginnitti believes Bush’s performance could make him a sought-after player, though linebackers generally don’t command top-tier salaries. While the Spotrac model suggests a three-year, $27 million deal, Ginnitti believes Bush could earn a bit more. He points out that Bush’s salary has already increased for 2025, and he’s on track for career highs across the board.
Browns Expected to Offer Bush a 3-Year, $30 Million Deal
Given Bush’s growth, Ginnitti predicts that a three-year, $30 million contract could be a realistic outcome. “He won’t break the bank like a top linebacker, but he’s shown enough to deserve a solid raise,” he said. “He’s probably not going to command $15 million per year, but $8-10 million per year sounds fair. A three-year, $30 million deal? I think both the team and the player would be comfortable with that.”
Bush’s impressive recovery and current form make him a key part of the Browns’ defense, and it looks like he’s set for a well-earned payday after turning his career around in Cleveland.
