Four-Star RB Messiah Mickens Commits to Virginia Tech and James Franklin
Messiah Mickens, a four-star running back from Harrisburg (Pa.) High, has committed to Virginia Tech and head coach James Franklin. Mickens, who had previously been committed to Penn State, made his decision after an official visit to Blacksburg over the weekend. He had also considered Ole Miss and Oklahoma, but ultimately chose the Hokies.
Mickens becomes the ninth commit in Virginia Tech’s 2026 recruiting class and the first to join since Franklin’s arrival at the school. The 5-foot-10 1/2, 225-pound running back had initially pledged to Franklin at Penn State in August 2023, and now looks forward to reuniting with him at Virginia Tech. The Rivals Industry Ranking places him as the No. 17 running back in the country and the No. 228 overall prospect.
Virginia Tech Visit Changes Mickens’ Recruitment
Mickens’ visit to Virginia Tech seemed to tip the scales in favor of the Hokies. Before the trip, Oklahoma was considered the frontrunner, but Mickens’ experience in Blacksburg left a lasting impression.
“It honestly was a great experience,” Mickens said. “I’m happy I made the decision to go and see my guys and Coach Franklin. Campus was very nice. It exceeded expectations.”
Mickens’ commitment could spark a strong recruiting momentum for Franklin and Virginia Tech moving forward.

Harrisburg High coach Calvin Everett praised Mickens not only for his football abilities but also for his character. Everett’s team is currently undefeated at 13-0 and on track for a state title, with Mickens playing a crucial role.
“First and foremost, he’s a great young man,” Everett said. “He’s extremely talented, but before we talk football, he’s just a great person. Very respectful, works hard, does all the things you want a young man to do.”
On the field, Everett highlighted Mickens’ vision, patience, and explosive burst. “His vision is impeccable. He sees things that even elite running backs don’t see. He’s extremely patient, and then he has an out-of-this-world burst when he hits the hole. He’s able to make people miss in the open field and does a lot of great things.”
Everett also spoke highly of James Franklin, noting their long-standing relationship and Franklin’s commitment to his players. “Coach Franklin is a great guy. I’ve known him for a long time, since his first days at Penn State. I know what he’s all about. He’s about his players, and that’s something I really admire about him.”
