Gators QB DJ Lagway Plans to Enter Transfer Portal
Florida quarterback DJ Lagway is preparing to move on from the Gators after two seasons in Gainesville.
Once viewed as the cornerstone of Florida’s future, the former five-star recruit has confirmed he will enter the NCAA Transfer Portal when it opens on Jan. 2. Lagway will have two years of eligibility remaining.
According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Lagway is looking for a new opportunity to fully realize his potential, similar to how quarterbacks such as Bo Nix and Jayden Daniels revitalized their careers after transferring.
Lagway’s time at Florida was marked by both promise and inconsistency. As a freshman in 2024, he posted a 6–1 record as the starter, throwing for 1,915 yards, 12 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. His performance helped spark a dramatic turnaround for the Gators, who finished 8–5 with a bowl victory after starting the season 4–5. Entering his sophomore year, Lagway was even mentioned as a potential dark-horse Heisman candidate.
However, his 2025 campaign told a different story. Hampered by offseason injuries, limited preparation in fall camp, and broader offensive struggles, Lagway started all 12 games in a 4–8 season. He passed for 2,264 yards with 16 touchdowns but also threw 14 interceptions. Turnovers proved costly, particularly in losses to LSU—where he threw five interceptions—and Kentucky, when three first-half picks led to the first benching of his career.
Lagway closed the season on a strong note, tying a career high with three touchdown passes while throwing for 168 yards against Florida State. When asked afterward about his future, he offered few details, saying he was focused on seeing how the roster would shape up and reiterating that he was still a Gator at that moment.
Although Lagway attended new head coach Jon Sumrall’s introductory press conference on Dec. 1, he has remained largely silent since, as Sumrall balances finishing his season at Tulane with assembling his Florida coaching staff. The offensive staff is expected to include coordinator Buster Faulkner, offensive line coach Phil Trautwein, and wide receivers coach Marcus Davis.
Lagway becomes the third Florida player to announce plans to enter the portal, joining defensive lineman Tarvorise Brown and wide receiver Muizz Tounkara. His exit leaves a significant void at quarterback for Sumrall to address during the Jan. 2–Jan. 16 transfer window. Florida’s current quarterback group includes redshirt freshman Tramell Jones Jr., incoming freshman Will Griffin, and redshirt junior Aiden Warner.
