Wisconsin Loses Veteran Starter to Transfer Portal After Missing on His Brother’s Recruitment
The Wisconsin Badgers have suffered another blow to an already thin position group, as their lone experienced cornerback has opted to re-enter the transfer portal after just one season in Madison.
Cornerback Geimere Latimer announced Tuesday that he plans to transfer, a move that wasn’t entirely unexpected and may offer a clear hint at his next destination.
Latimer arrived at Wisconsin last year as a transfer from Jacksonville State and quickly stepped into the slot cornerback role under head coach Luke Fickell. During his lone season with the Badgers, he appeared in 12 games, recording 28 tackles and forcing a fumble. However, he did not register a pass breakup or interception.
As a junior, Latimer was Wisconsin’s only remaining upperclassman in the cornerback room. With seniors Ricardo Hallman and D’Yoni Hill graduating, his departure leaves the Badgers with very limited experience at the position.
Unless Wisconsin adds veteran help through the transfer portal, the responsibility will fall largely on rising sophomores Omillio Agard and Cairo Skanes to anchor the secondary moving forward.
Latimer’s exit became increasingly likely after Wisconsin failed to secure a commitment from his younger brother, Amari Latimer. The four-star running back had been pledged to the Badgers for an extended period before flipping to West Virginia shortly before signing.
West Virginia is coached by Rich Rodriguez, who previously served as Geimere Latimer’s head coach at Jacksonville State. Given those connections, it would be surprising if Latimer ends up anywhere other than Morgantown when the transfer portal officially opens in early January.
