Rams mocked Seahawks before squandering 16-point lead
The Seattle Seahawks made an improbable comeback against the Los Angeles Rams, overcoming a 16-point fourth-quarter deficit to win 38-37 in overtime on Thursday night.
The Rams were leading 30-14 with under nine minutes to go, and considering Seattle had never overcome such a deficit, it was easy to see why LA thought they had the game in the bag. But in the NFL, anything can happen, and that’s exactly what played out.
“They were laughing. It was crazy… because they thought it was over,” Seahawks linebacker Ernest Jones IV said after the win. “What was it, 30-14 at one point? They thought it was done. It’s disrespectful. As a defense, that’s disrespectful. It’s disrespectful to the game, because there’s too much time left to be thinking it’s over.”
Seattle’s comeback began with a 58-yard punt return touchdown by wide receiver Rashid Shaheed with 8:03 left in the game. After a successful two-point conversion, the Seahawks forced a three-and-out and scored again in one of the most bizarre plays you’ll see in the NFL.
The Rams remained aggressive in overtime, but the Seahawks responded with another touchdown, opting to go for the win. Tight end Eric Saubert secured the victory with a short pass from Sam Darnold.
“I won’t put any names on it, but they know,” Jones said, referring to those who mocked Seattle. “They know, and we won.”
With the victory, the Seahawks claimed sole possession of the NFC’s top spot and now control their playoff destiny. A win in their final two games would secure a first-round bye, and they’ve already locked in a playoff spot.
Mike Macdonald made it clear that his mindset after the Seahawks’ thrilling 38–37 overtime comeback against the Rams was rooted in confidence and trust, not caution. Following the walk-off two-point conversion, he said he had no interest in settling for a tie, noting that the team had already talked through going for two in exactly this type of playoff-impacting situation.
Macdonald stressed that the choice wasn’t about taking an unnecessary gamble, but about believing in his players. He pointed to his confidence in the play that was called and his trust in Sam Darnold to deliver in overtime and close out the win.
As for Jones, who was part of the Rams’ Super Bowl LVI-winning team in 2021, the win felt even sweeter considering the circumstances.
“If I’m being completely honest, as long as we won, I could care less,” Jones added. “The win matters, and we’re moving on. We get a chance to go to the playoffs and keep fighting.”
