Former Liberty QB sensation commits to Colorado for final season of eligibility

Colorado has secured a top quarterback through the transfer portal. According to multiple reports, former Liberty QB Kaidon Salter is transferring to the Buffaloes for his final season of eligibility. Colorado is in search of a starting quarterback since Shedeur Sanders will play his last game in the Alamo Bowl against BYU on Dec. 28.

Salter played for Liberty over four seasons, becoming the team’s starting quarterback during the 2022 season. He had an impressive performance in 2023, leading Liberty to an undefeated season and a Conference USA championship, culminating in a Fiesta Bowl matchup against Oregon, where they faced a tough loss.

During that successful season, Salter completed 177 of 290 passes for 2,876 yards, recording 32 touchdowns and six interceptions. He also contributed significantly on the ground, rushing 163 times for 1,089 yards and 12 touchdowns. Only Bo Nix and Jayden Daniels had more total touchdowns that year. After briefly entering the transfer portal post-Fiesta Bowl, Salter opted to return to Liberty for a fourth season.

However, Liberty struggled in 2024, finishing the regular season with an 8-3 record and missing out on the Conference USA title game. Salter’s performance declined, as he threw for 1,886 yards with 15 touchdowns and six interceptions on 147 of 261 passing, along with rushing for 579 yards and seven touchdowns.

At Colorado, Salter is expected to be the leading candidate for the starting position in 2025, which will allow incoming freshman Julian Lewis—a five-star recruit and the No. 3 pro-style quarterback in the 2025 class—to develop and learn. Lewis recently signed with Colorado after decommitting from USC in November.

Salter’s addition marks Colorado’s second significant acquisition from the transfer portal this week, following commitments from former Alabama defensive lineman Jaheim Oatis and Northwest Missouri State tight end Zach Atkins.
