Nebraska just made a huge addition in the transfer portal at linebacker

Nebraska football has successfully acquired a talented linebacker from Oklahoma via the transfer portal. Head coach Matt Rhule has been juggling multiple tasks recently, as he readies the Cornhuskers for their first bowl game since 2016 while also signing new players. Nebraska is looking to improve its standing in a increasingly competitive Big Ten conference, and one of their strategies has been to bolster the roster around freshman quarterback Dylan Raiola.

As the Cornhuskers enhance their offensive lineup, Rhule is also securing an impressive defensive player. According to Hayes Fawcett, a National Recruiting/Transfer Portal Reporter for On3, former Oklahoma linebacker Dasan McCullough is set to join Nebraska. The Bloomington, Indiana native has one year of eligibility remaining.

Over his three-year career, McCullough has accumulated 95 tackles, five sacks, and 13 tackles for loss. He has been recognized as a freshman All-American and received All-Big Ten honors during his first year.

Nebraska’s rebuild on both sides of the field gives reason for optimism

The Cornhuskers got off to a strong start in 2024, winning five of their first six games, with their most impressive victory being a commanding win against Colorado. However, Matt Rhule’s squad faced challenges during Big Ten competition, finishing with a 3-6 record in the conference.

Nebraska’s defense allowed an average of 19.8 points per game, placing them seventh in the conference. Overall, this unit performed better than the offense, except for a particularly disappointing blowout defeat against Indiana.

Nebraska has secured the No. 21 ranked recruiting class for 2025. The program has already seen several players commit during this transfer portal period and is anticipating decisions from many additional top prospects. Matt Rhule’s team is set to make significant progress in his third year, as his past experiences at Baylor and Temple suggest that third seasons typically lead to exceeding fan expectations.

With the twelve-team College Football Playoff, Nebraska has the opportunity to reclaim its position in the sport’s rankings. The Big Ten has managed to place four teams in the playoff field, with three of them advancing to the quarterfinals. This trend will likely continue, allowing Nebraska a shot at being one of those multiple teams in the bracket, even with a few losses.

The Cornhuskers have already announced their schedule for next season. Although there are many teams that could become elite in 2025, several face uncertain futures. The addition of Dasan McCullough brings added stability to a Nebraska program that is expected to rise.
