San Francisco Giants Considering Trade for Bay Area Player Following Detroit Tigers’ Decision
The San Francisco Giants are entering next season with uncertainty at first base. One potential option they may explore is Detroit Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson, who could become available after the Tigers announced a change at the position for 2025.
With Detroit’s recent signing of second baseman Gleyber Torres, Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris—formerly the Giants’ general manager—confirmed that Colt Keith would shift to first base for the upcoming season.
This move puts Torkelson, the first overall pick in the 2020 MLB Draft, in a difficult position. The Arizona State product had a strong 2023 season with 31 home runs but struggled in 2024, posting a .219/.295/.374 line with 10 home runs and 37 RBIs over 342 at-bats.
Harris has not entirely ruled out Torkelson’s future with the Tigers, stating that if he has a strong offseason and spring training, there could still be a place for him. However, Detroit may be open to trading the 25-year-old if the right offer comes their way.
Torkelson, who hails from Petaluma, California, just an hour north of San Francisco, could benefit from a return to the Bay Area. A fresh start close to home could be just what he needs to revive his career.
A recent mock trade suggested that the Tigers could send Torkelson along with a reliever to the Giants in exchange for LaMonte Wade Jr. and others. While this deal remains possible, the Giants may prefer to keep Wade and platoon him with Torkelson at first base.
Another trade scenario could involve Wilmer Flores, a right-handed first baseman who might lose his spot if Torkelson is added to the roster, along with Doval, going to Detroit in exchange for Torkelson.
However, the Giants should be cautious about overpaying for Torkelson. If he turns out to be a disappointment, it would be wise not to give up valuable prospects. They might opt to wait and see how eager the Tigers are to move him if he no longer fits into their plans.
This situation could resemble the Giants’ experience with Joey Bart, who was once a top prospect before being traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates for minimal return and having a strong season. With Torkelson now down to just one minor league option, the Giants could potentially acquire him at a reasonable cost and help him reclaim his potential.
