HUGE BLOW: Ohio State Buckeyes confirm more Bad News as they officially loosed top Promising Defender to Transfer Portal

The Ohio State Buckeyes have officially lost a promising defender to the NCAA transfer portal. Mitchell Melton, a linebacker who had shown potential during his time at Ohio State, has decided to leave the program. This marks yet another departure for the Buckeyes, who have seen several players enter the transfer portal, despite managing to bring in some quality transfer recruits of their own.

Melton, who has been a part of Ohio State’s defense, has flashed significant promise in his limited playing time. Although he has had a relatively brief career with the Buckeyes, he recorded 12 tackles and two sacks during the 2024 season. With a larger role, he could develop into a major pass-rushing threat.

At 6-foot-4 and just over 260 pounds, Melton possesses a strong physical presence on the edge of the defense. His combination of size and potential will make him an attractive target for many programs in the transfer portal. Melton is now looking to find a team where he can compete for a starting spot in his final year of college football.

Originally ranked as a four-star prospect in the 2020 recruiting class, Melton was the No. 11 outside linebacker in the country and No. 184 overall nationally. While his potential didn’t fully materialize at Ohio State, there is still hope that he can find the right fit at another program and fulfill the promise that made him a highly sought-after recruit.
