Breaking: Georgia announces sad family news about Kirby Smart

The Georgia Bulldogs shared some heartbreaking news regarding coach Kirby Smart on Saturday.

The school reported that Smart’s father, Sonny, passed away early Saturday. Sonny Smart had suffered a fall and fractured his hip while walking in New Orleans on December 31, and he died due to complications from the surgery he underwent. In a statement, the university expressed that Sonny “fought bravely but could not overcome his injuries.”

Sonny had a prominent career as a high school football coach from 1988 to 2003. After Kirby became head coach before the 2016 season, Sonny was a familiar presence at Georgia games, and Kirby has often shared how much his father shaped his coaching philosophy.

Sonny traveled to New Orleans to support his son during the College Football Playoff quarterfinal at the Sugar Bowl. Unfortunately, Georgia lost to Notre Dame 23-10 in a game that was delayed by a day due to a terrorist attack in the city.
