South Carolina Transfer Quarterback Announces Move to ACC Program
Robby Ashford, the former South Carolina quarterback, has decided to join an ACC program, committing to Wake Forest on Sunday. The 6-foot-2, 229-pound redshirt senior, who has one year of eligibility left, will play for new Demon Deacons head coach Jake Dickert, who took over the program after Dave Clawson’s 11-year tenure.
Ashford, a four-star recruit ranked No. 168 in ESPN’s 2020 class, explained his decision to choose Wake Forest, citing Dickert’s vision for the program and the opportunity to be the starting quarterback in his final college season.
A dual-threat quarterback, Ashford has had an unconventional college football journey. He began his career at Oregon, spending two years without playing in a game, before transferring to Auburn. In 2022, as Auburn’s starting quarterback, he threw for 1,613 yards and seven touchdowns while rushing for 710 yards and seven touchdowns, earning Offensive Player of the Year honors. In 2023, he transitioned to a backup role, contributing 145 passing yards, two touchdowns, and 217 rushing yards.
Ashford transferred to South Carolina in 2024, where he backed up LaNorris Sellers. He played in eight games, completing 23 of 32 passes for 324 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for 227 yards and two scores.
Now, Ashford looks to make an impact at Wake Forest, aiming to finish his college career on a high note.
