Colorado head coach Deion Sanders is well-known for his flashy style and unconventional approach to team building, but he is equally committed to his players’ academic success. Throughout his two years as head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes, Sanders has stressed the importance of life beyond football and has encouraged players to develop plans for their futures. Therefore, it wasn’t surprising to see the 57-year-old coach calling out players who were struggling academically in a recent video from Well Off Media. However, it might have been startling to hear him warn that poor academic performance could impact a player’s NIL earnings, which is exactly what he did for players failing their classes.

“Seniors, I need you to pay attention,” Sanders stated. “This is serious. Coach Ray doesn’t say it, and I don’t usually get involved in what you’re earning… But when you stop attending class, that affects me. So, we will have to adjust your earnings. If I see a lot of Fs and Ds, it will impact your check.”

Sanders, who treats his program like an NFL team, pointed out that this kind of accountability is common at the professional level. “Do we understand that?” he asked his players. “I don’t want you going to coach Ray asking why money was deducted from your check. This is how it works in the pros: if you don’t fulfill your responsibilities, there will be consequences. So that’s how we will handle it.”

In this era of college football, where NIL money is significant, Sanders is making it clear that just playing football isn’t enough to justify those earnings. Coming off a successful season where he led the team to a 9-4 record, the best since 2016, he is expected to remain with the program in 2025, despite speculation about NFL coaching opportunities. Next season will mark the first time in a while that he won’t be coaching his sons, having coached them in high school and at Jackson State. Nonetheless, he conveyed his gratitude for simply having the chance to coach his team, emphasizing that he expects high standards from them moving forward.
