Deion Sanders and the Dallas Cowboys Have ‘Mutual Interest’ in Head Coach Role
Deion Sanders and the Dallas Cowboys have reportedly discussed the possibility of him becoming the team’s next head coach, following Mike McCarthy’s departure.
Adam Schefter shared during halftime of the NFC Wild Card game between the Rams and Vikings that there is mutual interest between Sanders and the Cowboys. He mentioned that a former general manager had pointed out over a year ago that Sanders might be a candidate for the Cowboys’ head coach position. While discussions have taken place, it’s still uncertain whether these talks will progress further.
Ryan Clark pointed out that Sanders’ strong name recognition and familiarity with the high-profile environment of the Cowboys could be key advantages. Jason Kelce also weighed in, expressing excitement over the idea of “Prime Time” leading America’s team.
Sanders has been open about the possibility of coaching in the NFL, but only under certain conditions—specifically, if it means coaching his sons, Shedeur and Shilo Sanders. He’s made it clear that coaching his sons would be the primary factor in considering an NFL role.
Sanders, who previously coached at Jackson State and won multiple SWAC championships, has also expressed strong interest in the Las Vegas Raiders’ head coach opening. NFL insiders say that Sanders’ associates have already reached out to the Raiders about his interest. Although he had previously hesitated to coach in the NFL due to the challenges of motivating millionaire players, Sanders has hinted that coaching his sons could change his stance.
Deion Sanders’ legacy at Jackson State includes a 27-6 record and two SWAC Championships, before moving to Colorado, where he’s already made a significant impact in his first two seasons.
As for the 2025 NFL Draft, Shedeur Sanders could be a top prospect, and Shilo Sanders is also drawing attention, with varying opinions on his potential draft status. If Deion were to coach in the NFL, the Raiders, with the No. 6 pick in the 2025 Draft, could be a strong fit, especially if both his sons were part of the team. Only time will tell if this comes to fruition.
