Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman David Jiricek is generating significant trade speculation, with league sources informing RG.org on Saturday that it may be only a matter of time before the 2022 sixth overall pick is moved. The 6-foot-3 right-handed defenseman is currently with the AHL’s Cleveland Monsters after being demoted to the Blue Jackets’ minor-league affiliate. Jiricek had previously expressed his disappointment over a demotion last season, according to The Athletic, but he has not requested a trade following this recent move, as noted by Aaron Portzline.
“I think eventually he will be traded,” a source told RG. “They reassigned him to the Monsters on Wednesday, so there might still be some hope from the organization. I think Waddell is just being cautious before a trade.” Jiricek’s NHL career has been uneven, appearing in 53 games since his debut, with only six played this season. The Blue Jackets’ decision to send the 20-year-old to the minors is seen as a way for him to refine his defensive skills against less competitive opponents and rebuild his confidence, but insiders also view it as an opportunity to showcase him for potential trade partners.
“It makes sense to look at teams that want to improve their defense, like the Edmonton Oilers and Nashville Predators, as possible destinations,” the source mentioned. “Both teams are showing interest, particularly Edmonton, which is looking to replace Philip Broberg in their top four.” The Oilers are indeed in need of right-shot defensive assistance, but they have limited draft capital after trading their 2025 first-round pick. In contrast, the Predators possess three first-round picks in the 2025 draft, giving them a stronger position in trade negotiations. Therefore, it seems likely that Nashville may have the advantage over Edmonton in the race for Jiricek.
