Seattle Mariners Reportedly Pursued Former Texas Rangers 1B Nathaniel Lowe This Offseason
According to MLB.com’s Daniel Kramer, the Seattle Mariners made an attempt to trade for first baseman Nathaniel Lowe earlier this offseason before he was eventually sent to the Washington Nationals.
Lowe, who previously played for the Texas Rangers, was the subject of trade talks with the Mariners, who offered Carlos Santana a deal worth more than the $12 million one-year contract he signed with the Guardians. Seattle made a strong push to acquire Lowe, but sources suggest the Rangers were hesitant to trade him within the division. Lowe ended up being traded to the Nationals.
Had the Mariners secured Lowe, it would have been a significant move for them. Lowe is under contract through 2026, which would have aligned with Seattle’s long-term plans. However, his increasing salary through arbitration could have been a concern as the Mariners look to manage payroll.
Lowe is an everyday player, not a platoon option, which likely would have impacted Seattle’s decision to sign Donovan Solano this offseason. With Lowe on the roster, Luke Raley would have likely been used as a designated hitter and fourth outfielder rather than at first base.
The 29-year-old Lowe, a six-year veteran of the Rays and Rangers, was instrumental in helping the Rangers win the 2023 World Series. He also earned a Gold Glove and Silver Slugger Award in recent years, with a career batting average of .272.
Currently, the Mariners plan to use a platoon at first base between Raley and Solano.
