South Carolina football is already in a strong position with its quarterback room for the 2025 season, featuring LaNorris Sellers, Air Noland, and Cutter Woods. However, head coach Shane Beamer isn’t resting on his laurels and is continuing to pursue additional talent.
Beamer recently visited four-star quarterback Brady Smigiel, who is committed to Florida State, after offering him a spot, according to The State. Smigiel, a 2026 commit, started rethinking his commitment to FSU after Gus Malzahn was hired as the Seminoles’ new offensive coordinator.
Smigiel’s father, Joe Smigiel, who is also the head coach at Newbury Park High School, mentioned that the Gamecocks’ hiring of Mike Shula as offensive coordinator played a key role in their interest.
“We were interested because of Mike Shula’s hiring. He’s got a pro-style background, and their offense has some strong pro elements. That’s where it all started. The three of them watched film and approved it,” Joe Smigiel said.
He also noted that Brady is planning visits to Washington, UCLA, Michigan, and Michigan State in the spring to keep his options open.
“If he’s taking a trip, he’s serious about it. These are the schools that could be in play, but nothing’s set in stone yet,” Joe added.
Despite the competition, South Carolina could have an advantage in landing Smigiel, thanks to Beamer’s leadership.
“As a head coach, we emphasize accountability, culture, and getting players to buy in. In today’s college football landscape, maintaining that culture is tough,” Coach Smigiel explained. “We asked Coach Beamer tough questions, and his responses reminded me of a coach who had a big impact on me—Dick Tomey at the University of Arizona. Beamer’s impressive coaching style really stood out, and our meeting went very well.”
Beamer and Shula are clearly focused on bringing Smigiel to South Carolina, so more official visits are likely on the horizon. For now, Smigiel remains committed to Florida State.
