New Mexico’s two-time Gatorade Player of the Year, Cam Dyer, will spend most of his first year at Arizona State recovering from knee surgery.
Cameron Dyer, the top recruit for Arizona State’s 2025 football class, will be out for a significant portion of his freshman year after undergoing surgery to fix a knee injury he sustained in a state playoff semifinal game last November.
After enrolling at ASU earlier this month, Dyer shared a picture on social media showing his right knee in a brace post-surgery for an ACL tear, which generally requires about eight months of recovery. This timeline makes it unlikely for him to compete for the Sun Devils this season.
Originally recruited as a wide receiver, ASU had planned to assess Dyer’s skills as a quarterback during spring practices and possibly in the fall, as stated by head coach Kenny Dillingham. He may return to practice as a limited participant at some point during the 2025 season, likely making this a redshirt year for him.

Dyer, a two-time recipient of Gatorade’s New Mexico Player of the Year award, had an impressive season at La Cueva High School, throwing for 2,446 yards and 31 touchdowns, while also rushing for 1,396 yards and 20 touchdowns. In total, he accounted for 51 touchdowns in just 13 games, finishing with a record of 12-1.
Demonstrating remarkable resilience, Dyer played in the 26-8 championship game loss against Cleveland High School despite his knee injury, but he was not at his best, having previously led his team to 12 consecutive victories.
Standing 6-foot-4 and weighing 202 pounds, Dyer was named a first-team all-state selection in 6A three times and won the Gatorade Player of the Year award twice. His accolades contributed to his ranking as the seventh-best athlete prospect and the 138th overall prospect in the 2025 class by 247Sports, surpassing all 20 other signees at ASU.
Similarly, redshirt freshman tight end Jayden Fortier, who was the second-highest-ranked recruit for the team in the 2024 class, also sustained a knee injury during his team’s 2023 high school state championship game and did not play last season while recovering from surgery.
The Sun Devils are not expected to rely on Dyer as their quarterback this year, thanks to the return of sophomore starter Sam Leavitt and senior backup Jeff Sims. However, the competition for the third-string position was anticipated to be between Dyer and fellow 2025 high school recruit Michael “Butter” Tollefson.
