Reports: ASU Coaches In No Rush To Give Most Anticipated Injury Update of Star Performer

The Sun Devils had a lighter practice on Friday, focusing on walkthroughs and special teams in preparation for Saturday’s scrimmage at Camp Tontozona. Kenny Dillingham also provided insight into ASU’s quarterback competition between Sam Leavitt and Jeff Sims.

CAMP TONTOZONA — Here are some notes and observations from Arizona State’s Friday practice, the ninth of preseason camp and the third held at Camp Tontozona. Media members were allowed to observe the full two-hour session, which was conducted in helmets only.

Absent Players: Sophomore offensive tackle Jalen Klemm and sophomore wide receiver Jordyn Tyson were not present. Klemm is sidelined indefinitely due to a health issue.

Returned to Practice: OL Semisi Tonga and LB Martell Hughes were back on the field.

Injuries: Senior defensive lineman Anthonie Cooper, who tore his ACL in April, is expected to miss a significant portion of the season. Freshman tight end Jayden Fortier, also recovering from an ACL tear in December, is limited at the start of camp. Several other players either did not practice or had limited participation, but their names cannot be disclosed per ASU football policy.

First Team Offense:

  • WR: Xavier Guillory, Jake Smith, Melquan Stovall
  • TE: Markeston Douglas / Chamon Metayer / Cameron Harpole
  • OL: Emmit Bohle (LT), Ben Coleman (LG), Leif Fautanu (C), Sean Na’a (RG), Max Iheanachor (RT)

Numerous substitutions were made during ASU’s walkthrough periods. Senior running back DeCarlos Brooks, junior wide receiver Jake Smith, and freshman wide receiver Zechariah Sample each saw reps with the first unit. Senior wide receiver Melquan Stovall was rotated out during 12 personnel packages, allowing different combinations of junior tight ends.

  • OL: Colby Garvin (LT), Terrell Kim (LG), Cade Briggs (C), Makua Pule (RG), Kyle Scott (RT)

ASU ran two 11-on-11 groups simultaneously, rotating players frequently. Freshman walk-on Navi Bruzon took snaps at quarterback with an OL composed of freshmen.
