Report: Edwin Diaz calls out A’s pitcher for disrespectful celebration
New York Mets closer Edwin Diaz was upset by what he perceived as a disrespectful celebration from an Oakland Athletics reliever.
In recent months, the Mets have been using a dance celebration inspired by the song “OMG,” which is performed by Mets infielder Jose Iglesias. This song has become a unifying theme for both the team and its fans.
On Tuesday, A’s reliever Austin Adams, who had been with the Mets during spring training before being released, came into the game with two runners on base and no outs. He successfully retired three batters in a row to escape the difficult situation. To celebrate, Adams performed the Mets’ “OMG” dance as he left the mound, prompting boos from the Citi Field crowd.

The Mets took notice of the celebration, and Diaz, at the very least, found it quite disrespectful.
“He crossed a line because that’s a celebration we use when we hit a homer or something,” Diaz told Bridget Reilly of the New York Post. “He can do it whenever he wants, that’s fine. But he shouldn’t be surprised if we respond to him in the coming days.”
Adams, on his part, insisted he meant no disrespect and was simply enjoying himself. He acknowledged that he was particularly fired up, given his time with the Mets during spring training before being released.
“Honestly, I looked up and was so surprised I got out of it. I was like, ‘Oh my gosh.’ And then it hit me, I was like, ‘Oh my gosh,’” Adams said. “So then I did it. That song is awesome. Iglesias is a good dude. I hope nobody is offended. Just having fun.”
However, it seems the Mets were indeed offended, intensifying a series that isn’t particularly thrilling on paper. Adams might be in line for some payback if the Mets get the chance.
