Houston Texans May Lose Offensive Star to Chargers
The Houston Texans could be at risk of losing a key offensive player to the Los Angeles Chargers. One of the major offseason storylines for the Texans revolves around the future of veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs.
After acquiring Diggs in a trade last offseason, it was expected that the two sides might form a long-term partnership. However, there is now uncertainty about whether the Texans will re-sign Diggs in free agency.
Diggs is recovering from a torn ACL that forced him to miss much of the 2024 season, having played only eight games. At 31 years old, the question arises whether the Texans are willing to invest significant money in an aging wide receiver coming off a major injury. While Houston might consider retaining him as a valuable weapon for quarterback C.J. Stroud, another team could offer a more lucrative contract than the Texans are willing to match.
A new projection suggests that Diggs may sign with the Los Angeles Chargers on a one-year, $14 million deal.
Marcus Mosher of The 33rd Team speculated that the Chargers, who are in need of wide receiver help, could be a landing spot for Diggs. He wrote, “Quentin Johnston hasn’t proven reliable as the No. 1 receiver, and Joshua Palmer struggles with injuries. Adding Diggs would give the Chargers a dependable option on the outside.”
Due to his injury, Diggs’ price could be more affordable, and Mosher views this as a potential steal for the Chargers, who are desperate for receiving talent.
In the 2024 season with the Texans, Diggs played in eight games, recording 47 receptions for 496 yards and three touchdowns, showing signs of another strong campaign.
Though there’s optimism that Diggs will recover fully from his injury and return to his previous form, his potential $14 million deal with the Chargers could be more than what the Texans are willing to offer. Houston doesn’t have much financial flexibility and has other areas of need outside of wide receiver.
It remains to be seen what will happen with Diggs this offseason. While Houston shouldn’t be ruled out as a possibility, it’s increasingly likely that Diggs could be leaving the team. If that happens, the Texans will need to shift focus and find more help for Stroud and the offense.
