Breaking: Ohio Bobcats Adds Top Professional To Coaching Roster To Bolster Expertise
California native Zach Closson has been named the Assistant Women’s Swimming Coach at Ohio University for the 2024-25 season. After a three-year stint with Mecklenburg Swim Association, Closson is eager to return to the collegiate swimming arena. Before his time at MSA, he served as a volunteer assistant coach at Bowling Green State University for two years, where he earned a degree in sports management with a business minor in 2019.
Closson is enthusiastic about joining the Bobcats this upcoming season.
“I’m really looking forward to working with talented athletes and being in such a competitive environment,” Closson shared. “There’s a standard of competitiveness we need to meet to excel and win the conference. I’m excited to be around passionate athletes who want to push their limits and reach new heights.”
Regarding his coaching philosophy, Closson focuses on fostering a positive team atmosphere that makes daily practices enjoyable. He aims to support his swimmers through their growth as both athletes and individuals, hoping his upbeat attitude will inspire them.
When it comes to training, Closson designs every practice with intention, always considering the benefits for his athletes. He believes in swimming fast during practice and plans to introduce anaerobic sets that emphasize speed and skill.
“The essence of our sport is racing,” he stated. “So why wouldn’t we train to go fast?”
On team culture, Closson emphasizes the importance of collective effort in achieving success. He believes that when everyone shares a common goal, the team can work together more effectively.
“Championship-winning teams are those where everyone is aligned with the same objectives, striving for a unified purpose,” he said.
Head coach Mason Norman expressed his enthusiasm about Closson joining the team.
“I’m most excited about Zach’s ability to communicate his passion for learning and developing student-athletes, which will greatly enhance our coaching staff,” Norman remarked. “That’s incredibly valuable.”
