In Gonzaga’s victory over Pacific on Saturday, senior guard Ryan Nembhard made history, setting a new record for assists. Nembhard and his teammate Khalif Battle have already showcased an impressive collection of jaw-dropping passes and powerful dunks in their first and only season together. Their on-court chemistry has made waves on social media, and their plays continue to turn heads.
One particular play—a lob from Nembhard to Battle during the second half against Pacific—will undoubtedly be remembered in Gonzaga’s basketball history. With just over 10 minutes left in the game and the Bulldogs leading comfortably, Nembhard took advantage of a Pacific turnover, driving into the lane to draw the defense in. At the same time, Battle made a timely cut near the baseline that went unnoticed by the Tigers’ defense until it was too late. Nembhard’s assist to Battle marked his sixth of the game, bringing his season total to 244 assists and surpassing his previous record of 243 assists set in 35 games last season.
Nembhard finished the game with seven points, eight assists, and four rebounds in 35 minutes, helping the Bulldogs (18-7, 9-3 WCC) secure a 78-61 win over Pacific (8-19, 3-10 WCC). Here’s what Nembhard shared after the game.
On the alley-oop to Khalif Battle that set the assist record: “That’s definitely a good way to get the record. But honestly, it’s just great to be out there with my teammates and get the win—that’s the most important part. It’s an honor and a blessing to set this record, but really, just having fun with the guys and getting victories is what matters most.”
On breaking his own assist record in fewer games than last season: “It’s kind of wild, but I don’t really focus too much on it. I’ve just been out there playing, trying to help the team win games. But it’s definitely a special accomplishment.”
On Gonzaga’s defensive improvements and areas that need work: “I’m not exactly sure. We’re all just working on being more connected defensively, paying closer attention to scouts and personnel. We know that our defense is going to be key for winning games down the stretch. If we play good defense, the offense will come, and we’ll be able to put up points. It all starts with defense.”
On how the team’s defensive focus in practice has translated into games and its impact on the team’s mindset: “It’s good that we all understand how important defense is for us and for winning. When we all lock in and realize that defense is what will help us win, it becomes a collective effort from everyone on the team.”
