New York Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez is confident that his team boasts the best lineup in MLB heading into the 2025 season after a transformative offseason.
Alvarez expressed his optimism while reporting early for spring training, saying, “I think it’s going to be a great lineup. I think we are the best lineup in all of baseball. We have a little bit of everything. We have power, we have contact hitters, and we have power hitters. We have everything. We can compete with any team.”
The Mets strengthened their roster by signing free-agent Juan Soto to a historic 15-year, $765 million deal, re-signing Pete Alonso, bringing back Jesse Winker, and trading for Jose Siri. These additions join NL MVP runner-up Francisco Lindor, breakout star Mark Vientos, and Brandon Nimmo in a potent offensive lineup.
Projected starting positions include:
- SS: Francisco Lindor (S)
- RF: Juan Soto (L)
- 1B: Pete Alonso (R)
- LF: Brandon Nimmo (L)
- 3B: Mark Vientos (R)
- DH: Jesse Winker (L)
- C: Francisco Alvarez (R)
- 2B: Jeff McNeil (L)
- CF: Jose Siri (R)
The Mets finished last season ranked sixth in home runs, seventh in wRC+, eighth in on-base percentage, and 10th in slugging percentage. These numbers are expected to rise significantly with the addition of Soto, who hit a career-high 41 home runs with a 180 wRC+ and a .989 OPS.
FanGraphs projects the Mets to have five players hitting at least 20 home runs, including three with 30 or more long balls.
