Boston College Men’s Basketball Falls to Notre Dame in Double Overtime
The Boston College Eagles suffered their third consecutive loss on Wednesday night, falling 97-94 in double overtime to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
The game was a back-and-forth battle for much of the first half, featuring seven ties and three lead changes. Notre Dame led 28-23 with 7:20 left in the first half, but Boston College responded with an 18-7 run to close out the period, taking a 41-35 lead into halftime.
Guard Fred Payne played a key role in the rally, contributing nine points, including three three-pointers, along with one steal, one rebound, and three assists.
Boston College carried its momentum into the second half, opening with a 9-3 run to build a 50-38 lead, marking the first time the Eagles had a double-digit advantage since January 1 against Miami. The Eagles extended the run to 14-3, pushing their lead to 55-41. However, Notre Dame battled back to tie the game at 76 with 1:36 remaining.
A missed jumper by Boston College’s Chad Venning as time expired sent the game into overtime tied at 80, the Eagles’ second consecutive overtime contest.
In the first overtime, both teams scored five points and missed their final shots, sending the game into double overtime. Venning missed a jumper with 13 seconds left, while Notre Dame’s Markus Burton missed a three-pointer with two seconds remaining.
In the second overtime, Notre Dame sealed the victory with a layup by Kebba Njie and two free throws by Burton in the closing seconds. Boston College’s Donald Hand Jr. missed a half-court shot as time expired.
Boston College shot 53.7% from the field and 47.6% from three-point range, while Notre Dame shot 47.3% from the field and 30.4% from beyond the arc.
Venning led the Eagles with 21 points, while Burton scored a game-high 32 for Notre Dame.
Next, Boston College will travel to Raleigh, N.C., to face the NC State Wolfpack on Saturday afternoon, with tipoff scheduled for 2 p.m. ET on ACC Network.
