The Packers hire Luke Getsy as senior offensive assistant after struggles with Bears and Raiders.
The Green Bay Packers are bringing back former Chicago Bears and Las Vegas Raiders offensive coordinator Luke Getsy as their senior offensive assistant, according to NFL insider Tom Pelissero. This marks Getsy’s third stint with the organization after previously holding various coaching roles.
Getsy was on Green Bay’s staff from 2014 to 2017 and again from 2019 to 2021, playing a role in five NFC North division championships. His return reunites him with head coach Matt LaFleur, whose offensive system he already knows well. While not widely regarded as a top-tier play caller, Getsy has a strong background in coaching quarterbacks and wide receivers, which could make him a valuable asset to LaFleur’s staff.
Luke Getsy’s struggles as OC with Bears, Raiders before Packers return
After departing Green Bay in 2021, Luke Getsy became the Bears’ offensive coordinator in 2022 but struggled to establish consistent production. In his final season with Chicago in 2023, the offense ranked in the middle of the league in total yardage, averaging 323.2 yards per game, but finished in the bottom half in passing offense with 182.1 yards per game. The Bears also averaged 21.2 points per game that year.
Getsy’s time with the Raiders in 2024 proved even more challenging. Las Vegas ranked in the bottom half of the league in total offense, managing just 303.2 yards per game. Their rushing attack was the league’s worst at 79.8 yards per game, and their scoring output of 18.2 points per game ranked fourth lowest in the NFL. He was dismissed midway through the season before finishing the year as a defensive consultant for the Packers.
Green Bay concluded the 2024 season with an 11-6 record, placing third in the NFC North. They earned a Wild Card spot but were eliminated in the first round, falling 22-10 to the eventual Super Bowl 59 champion Philadelphia Eagles.
With his return to the Packers, Getsy will serve in a supporting role rather than as a play-caller, focusing on refining the offense as Green Bay looks to build on its 2024 campaign.
