With Nelson set to become an unrestricted free agent and consistently posting 25–35 goals per season, playoff contenders are expected to pursue him aggressively.
Although Nelson is reportedly open to re-signing with the Islanders, he’s also focused on winning, which could sway his decision. The Colorado Avalanche, New Jersey Devils, and Toronto Maple Leafs are among the teams showing interest in acquiring the veteran center.
Potential Rangers-Ducks Trade in the Works?
Larry Brooks of the New York Post has suggested a bold trade scenario between the Rangers and Ducks. Brooks believes Rangers GM Chris Drury should consider trading winger Alexis Lafreniere to Anaheim in exchange for forward Trevor Zegras.
Both 23-year-olds have struggled to meet the lofty expectations placed on them after being highly touted draft picks. Brooks argues that a change of scenery could benefit both players, making this trade a potential win-win for each franchise.
Oilers Eye Jean-Gabriel Pageau
Additionally, there are rumors linking the Edmonton Oilers to Islanders forward Jean-Gabriel Pageau. The Oilers are reportedly one of two teams showing interest in the versatile forward, who could bolster their depth as they gear up for a playoff run.

Larry Brooks didn’t hold back when discussing Alexis Lafreniere’s performance before the 4 Nations Face-Off break, criticizing the winger’s lack of backchecking and calling it “a bad look.” With Lafreniere’s seven-year, $52.15 million contract extension beginning to raise concerns, Brooks questions whether the Rangers made the right move.
Brooks believes that Anaheim Ducks forward Trevor Zegras could be a better fit for New York. He suggests that Zegras, who has struggled with injuries and criticism for being a one-dimensional player, might flourish outside of Anaheim’s rebuilding environment. While Brooks acknowledges the risks in trading for Zegras, he remains confident that a fresh start could benefit both players.
Oilers and Golden Knights Eye Pageau
Stefen Rosner of The Hockey News reports that multiple Western Conference teams, including the Edmonton Oilers and Vegas Golden Knights, are showing interest in Islanders center Jean-Gabriel Pageau.
Pageau, 32, has one year left on his contract with a $5 million AAV and a 16-team no-trade clause. With 27 points in 52 games, Pageau has proven valuable for the Islanders, boasting a faceoff win rate of nearly 60% and serving as a key penalty killer.
While the Oilers could benefit from adding a depth center like Pageau, his price tag and remaining term could complicate a deal. Unless the Islanders are willing to retain some salary, acquiring him may prove difficult.
If Islanders GM Lou Lamoriello decides to initiate a roster shake-up before the trade deadline, Pageau could be among the players moved, alongside Brock Nelson and Kyle Palmieri.
