The Arizona Cardinals have numerous roster needs this offseason, particularly on the defensive side, where they require assistance at edge rusher, defensive tackle, cornerback, and linebacker. While wide receiver isn’t a top priority, they’ve nonetheless been mentioned as a potential fit for one of the biggest free-agent receivers this offseason.
In a piece analyzing the best team fits for the NFL’s top 50 free agents, ESPN’s Matt Bowen highlighted the Cardinals as an ideal match for Amari Cooper of the Buffalo Bills. Cooper’s 2024 season was disappointing; he struggled early in the season with only 24 catches for 250 yards due to subpar performances from Deshaun Watson. Although there was optimism after his trade to the Bills, his situation didn’t improve significantly.
In his eight games with the Bills, Cooper recorded just 20 catches for 297 yards. Despite these challenges, ESPN ranks him as the 30th best free agent, suggesting that last season may have been an outlier. In 2023, Cooper had a more productive season with 72 catches for 1,250 yards, even while navigating various backup quarterbacks. At 30 years old, he may surprise some with his continued potential.
However, my main concern about this fit is that the Cardinals don’t have a pressing need for a receiver, and Cooper is likely to demand a significant salary. There is optimism that Harrison Jr. will improve in his second year and become the standout receiver the Cardinals need. They also have a proven asset in tight end Trey McBride. While adding a veteran to their young receiving corps could be beneficial, Cooper might be too pricey.
The team’s defensive issues are more pressing and should be the focus of their free agency spending. Acquiring Cooper seems more like a luxury than a necessity, and the Cardinals aren’t in a position to pursue luxury signings at this time.
