Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q) kicked off its 20th anniversary celebrations by warmly welcoming 132 students from the Class of 2028 during the 2024 Convocation.

This ceremony marked the largest group of Qatari students ever admitted and celebrated two decades of collaboration with Qatar Foundation, highlighting the university’s lasting impact on Qatar’s educational landscape. The milestone will be celebrated throughout the year with various events and activities.

Joseph Hernandez, Assistant Dean for Admissions and Strategic Enrollment Management, emphasized the significance of this milestone. “The diversity in this year’s class reflects our expanding global reputation. Foreign Policy Magazine recently recognized our curriculum as the best for careers in international relations and foreign policy. Our unique position within Qatar Foundation’s remarkable ecosystem allows us to attract talented students eager to address global challenges while engaging with our world-class curriculum right here in Qatar.”

Dr. Safwan Al Masri, Dean of GU-Q, encouraged the new students to embrace the unique opportunities available to them. “You are joining a university like no other, in a country like no other, at a time like no other. As we celebrate our 20th anniversary, remember that you are part of something extraordinary. GU-Q is where intellectual curiosity aligns with global responsibility, where rigorous academics meet a commitment to making a difference. You now carry the legacy that spans continents and centuries, and it’s your responsibility to continue it.”

The Convocation concluded an engaging Hoya Welcome Week, designed to assist students in their transition to university life. The week included activities such as cultural immersion sessions, academic discussions, and team-building exercises, all aimed at fostering a sense of belonging and intellectual curiosity while laying a strong foundation for their Georgetown journey ahead.
