Tennessee Athletic Director Danny White is not pleased with Nebraska after the two schools decided to cancel their scheduled football series for 2026 and 2027. According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, the Cornhuskers backed out due to wanting eight home games in 2027, when they expect stadium capacity to be reduced because of renovations.

White quickly responded to clarify the situation, making it clear that Tennessee was not at fault for the cancellation. On X (formerly Twitter), he wrote, “Correction: Tennessee is not canceling this series, Nebraska did. We are very disappointed that they didn’t want to play these games, especially this close to 2026.”
White expressed his frustration further in an interview with Volquest, saying, “It’s extremely disappointing. This series has been under contract for so long. We had been planning on playing it. For it to get cancelled this short notice, we are extremely disappointed.”
The contract for the series was initially agreed upon in 2006, with the games set for 2016 and 2017. However, both teams agreed to postpone the matchups for a decade, and now the games will not take place. As a result, both Tennessee and Nebraska will need to find new opponents for the 2026 and 2027 seasons.
It seems there may be the potential for a new Big Ten-SEC rivalry, but it remains uncertain if the teams will ever face off on the football field.
