The Houston Rockets are in a strong position to pursue a superstar trade. We know, it sounds familiar.

Of course, you can’t stop us from discussing the Rockets’ trade options, especially since they have an abundance of assets and young talent. It seems inevitable that a major consolidation trade will happen.

In this analysis, we will explore these possibilities, including some smaller targets. If the Rockets are performing well this season, they might consider acquiring a role player to enhance their rotation.

Here’s our list of their top five trade targets as they head into the 2024-25 season.

5. Marcus Smart
There was considerable buzz about Smart and the Rockets before the draft. But were those rumors founded, or just speculation?

While Smart has a connection with Ime Udoka and the Rockets are focusing on defense to establish their new culture, it’s uncertain if he’s the ideal fit for the team.

Prioritizing defense is important, but the Rockets also need to score. Smart’s career three-point shooting percentage of 32.3% doesn’t help with floor spacing, which is crucial for the team.

Bringing him in might hinder the development of talented shooters like Reed Sheppard. If the Rockets fully commit to a win-now strategy by acquiring an MVP contender, Smart could be reconsidered. For now, they should explore other options.

4. Dorian Finney-Smith
The Rockets and Nets always seemed likely to strike a deal, and it finally happened. With Rafael Stone having sent most of Brooklyn’s draft capital back in exchange for a greater number of future picks from the Suns, the two teams no longer share the same incentives to trade.

That said, a deal is still possible. Brooklyn appears to be embracing a total rebuild. Although they traded Mikal Bridges, they still have a few win-now veterans on their roster. Could the Rockets help them address that situation?

We could have also mentioned Cam Johnson, as he would fit well on the court with the Rockets, but his contract is quite burdensome. In contrast, Finney-Smith is a more affordable option.

He’s also a very impactful player. Finney-Smith is a 3-and-D wing who can contribute to winning without needing the ball in his hands. While he presents similar rotational challenges as Smart, it’s simpler to add wings to the lineup. The Rockets could create potent lineups featuring Finney-Smith alongside Tari Eason and Jabari Smith Jr.

3. Bobby Portis
Unlike the other players on this list, Portis addresses an immediate need for the Rockets.

While they have plenty of depth at the center position with Alperen Sengun, Steven Adams, and Jock Landale, only Landale offers any floor spacing, and he’s more of a third-string caliber player.

We like the idea of using Jabari Smith Jr. at center, but that lineup may only be viable as a “Death Lineup.” If the Rockets were to acquire Portis, they’d gain a true stretch big man capable of logging significant minutes.

The Bucks are aiming for a championship in 2024-25, so they’re unlikely to move Portis unless they can upgrade their roster. Since the Rockets are also focused on competing, a third team might be necessary to facilitate a trade. If they can find one, Portis would add a whole new dynamic to the team.

2. Zion Williamson

However, his health continues to be a concern. His shooting struggles also make him tricky to build around. While his defense has improved, it would still be best to surround him with shooting. There’s uncertainty about how he would fit with Sengun, and he’s not an ideal match with Amen Thompson either.

1. Devin Booker
The Suns are not heading into the 2024-25 season with plans to trade Devin Booker. Their hope is that he will be a key player for them as they push deep into the postseason.

But what if that doesn’t seem feasible by the trade deadline? The Suns are fully committed to their current roster, especially after a disappointing 2024-25 season. If they find themselves underperforming again, they might start considering their draft picks.

The Houston Rockets currently hold those picks. If the Suns aim to reclaim them, they may need to part with Booker. Unlike Williamson, Booker is easier to integrate into a team strategy due to his elite shooting ability. He would create a strong offensive pairing with Sengun and complement Thompson well.
