49ers Select Marshall DE Mike Green in Latest Mock Draft
This is a highly plausible prediction. The 49ers are likely to pick a defensive lineman with their first-round pick this year.
Under Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch, the team has selected three defensive linemen in the first round: Solomon Thomas, Nick Bosa, and Javon Kinlaw. Currently, the position is thinner than it has been in a long time.
That’s why CBS Sports analyst Chris Trapasso suggests they will select Marshall defensive end Mike Green with the 11th pick.
“Green brings a Leonard Floyd-like style, with speed and flexibility to rush the edge,” Trapasso writes. “He was extremely productive at Marshall and looks incredibly explosive on film.”
This is a very realistic projection. The 49ers tend to favor seniors who perform well at the Senior Bowl, and that’s exactly what Green did recently. Additionally, 49ers assistant coach K.J. Wright coached Green during the event, meaning the team is likely very familiar with him.
However, I don’t believe the 49ers should select him.
While Green had a standout season in 2024, his earlier college career was underwhelming. He played at Virginia and recorded only one sack before transferring.
I’m not a fan of picking players with just one impressive season in the first round. Trey Lance and Solomon Thomas were both one-season wonders.
The 49ers should focus on drafting a player who has been dominant since their freshman or sophomore year.
