UPDATE: Big 12 Conference Makes Significant Announces For Second Week of Season

IRVING, Texas – Arizona State’s Nu’u Contrades and BYU’s Cooper Vest were named Big 12 Co-Players of the Week, while Arizona’s Mathis Meurant and K-State’s Lincoln Sheffield shared the Newcomer of the Week honors. Utah’s Colter McAnelly earned the title of Big 12 Pitcher of the Week for the second week of the 2025 season.

Contrades had an impressive series against Oral Roberts, recording five hits, three walks, and three home runs, driving in five runs and scoring six times. The junior hit two homers in the deciding game, including one on the first pitch. He concluded the weekend with a .467 on-base percentage and stole two bases.

Vest posted a .438 batting average over four games against UCLA and Cal State Northridge, boasting a slugging percentage of 1.188. He hit three home runs, three doubles, and recorded five RBIs while scoring seven runs. Defensively, the senior first baseman achieved a perfect fielding percentage of 1.000, with 21 putouts and two assists. He has not committed an error in eight games, totaling 55 putouts and six assists in 61 chances.

McAnelly pitched a career-high seven innings in a combined shutout victory over San Diego State, earning Pitcher of the Week honors for the second straight week. He became the first pitcher from Utah to achieve double-digit strikeouts in a game in four seasons, striking out the first seven batters he faced. During the first six innings, he allowed only one Aztec runner to reach second base.

Meurant had a strong showing in Arizona’s sweep of San Diego, hitting safely in all three games, scoring runs, and recording RBIs in each. He achieved two multi-hit games, homering in back-to-back outings and driving in five runs as the Wildcats outscored the Torreros by an average of six runs per game. The junior led Arizona for the week in runs, extra-base hits, total bases, slugging percentage, and on-base percentage, hitting .625 with a 2.200 OPS.

Sharing Newcomer honors, Sheffield was a standout in K-State’s 10-2 victory over then-No. 22 TCU at the Kubota College Baseball Classic. He pitched seven innings, allowing five hits and one earned run while striking out eight, including fanning the side in the first inning.
