Tre Holloman’s Buzzer Beater Boosts Purdue in Big Ten Standings
Tre Holloman’s dramatic half-court buzzer beater on Wednesday night not only gave Michigan State a victory over Maryland, but it also helped Purdue in the Big Ten standings.
Holloman’s game-winning shot secured a 58-55 win for the Spartans, keeping them in first place in the Big Ten with a 14-3 record. At the same time, the loss dropped Maryland to 11-6 in conference play, tying them with Purdue and UCLA.
With Maryland’s defeat, Purdue moved ahead of the Terrapins in the standings, holding the tiebreaker due to their 83-78 win over Maryland in December. This places Purdue in fourth place, while Maryland holds the tiebreaker over UCLA for fifth.
The top four teams in the Big Ten earn a double-bye in the conference tournament, meaning they don’t play until Friday, March 14, with the tournament beginning on Wednesday, March 12.
Purdue still needs to perform well to secure a top-four spot. The Boilermakers will face UCLA at home on Friday, March 1, then host Rutgers on March 4, and finish the regular season with a road game at Illinois on March 7.
While a lot could still change, if both Purdue and Maryland win all their remaining games — with Maryland playing Penn State, Michigan, and Northwestern — the Boilermakers would earn a double-bye in the Big Ten Tournament, securing a top-four finish.
