Red Wings’ Coach’s Future Hanging on Homestand Results
Detroit Red Wings head coach Derek Lalonde may be facing potential job losses if he doesn’t secure a series of strong performances during the team’s ongoing homestand. NHL insider Darren Dreger discussed this possibility on Tuesday’s “Insider Trading” segment on TSN, suggesting that Lalonde’s future may depend on the results of Detroit’s current three-game homestand.
“They have a crucial three-game stretch this week,” Dreger noted. “What happens if they finish 1-for-3 or 0-for-3? On the flip side, they could go 3-for-3 or win two out of three, which would likely keep Derek Lalonde in his role.” The Red Wings are set to compete against the Calgary Flames, New Jersey Devils, and Vancouver Canucks over five days, starting Wednesday with a narrow overtime victory against the Flames, winning 2-1.
After Wednesday’s victory, Detroit has achieved a record of 10-10-2, but their playoff chances are quickly diminishing. Their recent performance, having lost four of the six games prior to their win over Calgary, hasn’t helped their cause. Despite a 4-2 victory against the New York Islanders on Monday, insider Darren Dreger mentioned that General Manager Steve Yzerman may feel “forced” to take action if the team doesn’t perform well in their upcoming home games. “If they fail to win those home matchups, it could prompt Yzerman to make a decision,” Dreger said.
“There’s a belief that they would consider an interim internal candidate and hope for a top coach to become available.” Head coach Derek Lalonde has been with the Red Wings for the last two seasons and is in the final year of his contract. He holds an overall record of 87-79-21 in Detroit, but has yet to lead the team to the playoffs.
