LINKS: Georgetown Soars To Massively In Talent Rankings – Analytics Expert Weighs In!

Bart Torvik’s analytics indicate some positives and some negatives ahead of the season

Even the most devoted college basketball fans were taken aback by a post on X showcasing the Georgetown Hoyas as the 13th most “talented” team for the 2024-25 season, according to the analytics site BartTorvik.com.

In fact, when looking in the right places and sorting by “Projected Effective Talent,” it’s surprising to see Georgetown ranked quite high, especially compared to where fans have typically found the Hoyas on these analytics sites in the past decade.

According to a comment from Torvik in 2019, “Talent” is calculated using composite recruiting ranks adjusted for minutes played.

While Georgetown’s talent rating is impressive, their other projected rankings are less encouraging. Torvik predicts a record of 15-16 for GU (7-13 in conference play), with an adjusted offensive efficiency ranking of #65 and a defensive efficiency ranking of #153 (which is still concerning). Other metrics, such as returning minutes (23.3%), returning possession minutes (30.6%), projected effective experience (1.18), and projected production from transfers (233), align with the anticipated changes to a younger roster (details still pending).

On another note, with the recent release of the nonconference schedule, some are putting Georgetown in a “WTF” category regarding their strength of schedule. This is based on a new score from Bart Torvik’s metrics, Wins Against Bubble (WAB), which will be featured on the NCAA Selection Committee’s team sheets for the first time this year.

According to PaintTouches, “WAB is a mathematical formula designed to estimate how an average bubble team would perform in a specific game, allowing for a more accurate comparison of teams over a season despite differing schedules,” providing a more precise measure than the conventional strength of schedule.

Additionally, PaintTouches calculates what the WAB scores would look like if a team were to go undefeated in nonconference play, concluding that “the Georgetowns of the world continue to be bottom dwellers, surviving on empty calories.”

On X, PaintTouches notes that GU’s nonconference schedule is “slightly improved compared to last season’s potential WAB,” but it won’t provide this #13-ranked-in-talent team—or any other BIG EAST team—any advantages if they find themselves on the bubble.
